He can go from talking about big butts on one track and losing the love of his life in the next. His music is slower and a bit more sombre. It’s loud, heavy, and the kind of thing you could play at a party Here are some famous rappers who have the name “lil” in their rap names. But, because they were small when they first got the name, it has stuck around. There are some people with the nickname “lil” who are anything but small. It can also be given to people when they are young, and it just sticks with them for the rest of their life. The term “lil” is often given to people who are shorter than the rest of the gang members. In the United States of America, there are a lot of nicknames in gang culture. How did we get here? Why do so many rappers like to call themselves “lil”? Lil Is A Common Name In Rap Why Rappers Are Called “Lil”įrom Nursery Rhymes to rappers. It’s funny to think that a name associated with rap came from a nursery rhyme about small bears. The rhyme would go “lil boy bear, lil gal bear”. Not only is it super old, but originally, it came from a children’s nursery rhyme. The Surprising Origin Of LilĪlthough today, when we hear the word “lil”, we might think of rappers such as Lil Jon or Lil Wayne, the abbreviation for “little” can be found as far back as the 1800s. Try saying “lil”, but have it rhyme with “mill” and sound nothing like “little”. But it could also be because our mouths are designed so that the tongue rolls off at the end of “lil”, giving the impression of a “t”. Perhaps this is because we subconsciously know what it should be. However, for one reason or another, it always ends up sounding like some form of variation of the form “little”. In theory, it should be said the same way that it’s spelt. The pronunciation of “lil” is something that I can’t help but find fascinating. If I’m a “lil cross”, that means I’m a bit cross. If I ask you for “just a lil bit”, I am asking you for only a small amount. For when our command of English is less important than just getting our point across. When we say “lil” instead of “little”, we’re saying it in a way that’s shorter, quicker, and less formal. What Does Lil Mean?Īs you may have already guessed from much of the article, “lil” has the same meaning as “little”. We don’t have to spend our lives impressing our English teachers. Language isn’t made up of set in stone rules. Neither of these terms is “official”, they are slang terms meant to give the impression of edginess and street smarts. However, when we’re not in an English classroom, or writing for English scholars, we can bend, and even break, some of the rules of English.Įven though “lil” and “lil’” and even “li’l” are incorrect, that is not a good enough reason for us not to use them. ![]() But It Doesn’t Matter That Li’l, Lil’ And ‘Lil Are Grammatically Incorrect However, I doubt Lil Wayne tried too hard to impress his English teacher. Therefore, when we turn “little” into “lil”, we’re getting rid of the “tt”, meaning “li’l” makes the most sense out of our three options. When we use an apostrophe for contraction, we use it to replace the letters we’ve gotten rid of. But if we want to follow grammar rules as closely as we can, the one that breaks the rules the least is “li’l”. Of course, neither of the three options is technically “correct”. “Li’l” Is Technically The Least Grammatically Incorrect Watch the video: Only 1 percent of our visitors get these 3 grammar questions right.

![]() I read turning the EQ off might help, but when I go to the settings, it's not readily apparent to me where the on/off switch is for the EQ. I've tried uninstalling Spotify, and then reinstalling the newest version, the older versions from APK 2.8 (I think?), tried uninstalling the volume booster and just playing Spotify without it (back to square one, an it produced predictable low volume), then reinstalled the volume booster (same headaches). Why does it seem to work for my phone and other music players, but not Spotify? What is the official line on using Spotify with volume booster apps (specifically Speaker Boost Pro for Android)? This takes a couple of minutes and is aggravating. ![]() Then I can't get the volume booster to work, unless I restart the phone and then reopen my Bluetooth connection and reopen Spotify again. Starting a song with the Speaker Boot will work, as long as I DON'T change the song. The thing is, it works fine for bluetooth audio (I can hear the clicks of my phone over the speakers as I navigate thru the apps) and it works fine with Soundcloud. You should also accept the warrior's explanation that the young lady who shows up with him dressed like a princess (Ni Ni) is indeed one, and that she is on the run from some very terrible people. As its hero Jack Bronson (newcomer Uriah Shelton) does, you should simply accept with little question that the English-speaking Chinese warrior Zhao (Mark Chao) in steel armour and straw hat who suddenly appears next to his bedside one evening has indeed travelled through a time portal in a waist-height drum-shaped chest he had received as a gift from the antiques dealer he helps out at after school. What they didn't seem to realize was that they had it all along. Certainly, their franchise was trying to capitalize on the folk movement. The Chess Brothers wanted part of that action. ![]() But now white college kids were rediscovering black artists-the originators of the art form-who fueled the folk blues revival across the country… Son House, Sleepy John Estes, Skip James, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and some others were now suddenly all the rage, as if being raised from the dead-only they weren't dead, hadn't died. But then it became more real when a few music researchers (Dick Waterman, Phil Spero and Nick Perls) went south and found the originators of Mississippi Delta music who were still alive and well, gradually coaxing them out of the shadows and back into the light. He wasn't exaggerating-during this early part of decade in American music, it was all about the emergence of artists like Pete Seeger, The Kingston Trio, Odetta, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary, and a young Bob Dylan among others. Based on well-documented itinerary notes from music historian Stefan Wirz, Muddy most likely made his overseas departure in the last week of September to arrive in time for the beginning of the Blues Festival tour in Frankfurt, Germany on September 24th.Ĭhess producer Ralph Bass, who wrote liner notes for the music that would become Folk Singer, mentions that the folk craze was taking over the country. Indeed, Muddy Waters was scheduled to perform as one of the main acts on the star-studded blues extravaganza. But things had changed by 1963 when Waters, Dixon, Guy, and James came together for this seminal event, which took place shortly before the 1963 American Folk Blues Festival, an event which, in hindsight, may have very well been the impetus for bringing this session to fruition. Some of Muddy's biggest Chess pieces had been already recorded between 1950-1960. It would be captured in a different manner than the usual approach, and there were reasons for it to be done this way.īy now, the once-plentiful and thriving urban Chicago blues scene was slowly dying on the vine in the black community several live venues were losing steam and money too even Muddy's main sidekick, guitarist Jimmy Rogers, had thrown in the towel as early as 1960 and said "I'm retired." His departure from the Chicago clubs lasted throughout the decade, 'til the next one started. In this early part of 1963, these three gentlemen, along with Chess session drummer Clifton James (the originator of the Bo Diddley drum beat, did you know?) came together to do a special recording for the Chess label. Among them were three kings: Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and Buddy Guy. They also hired some of the greatest blues musicians in the world to make the music. ![]() Chess Records was owned and operated by Phil and Leonard Chess, who bought the building and hired a few key people to run the recording studio and its offices. In a gritty neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago sat a small legendary studio that ultimately became a powerhouse as the years went passing by. Yes, Chubby Checker had twisted his way over Fats Domino's blueberry hill, but American teens hadn't yet started to twist and shout, had they? During the first half, Jerry Lee's great balls of fire had already burned, The King's hound dogs had howled, Johnny had been good (but Chuck the Duck Walker was caught being bad). The fifties will always have the bragging rights of being the "golden era" of rock n' roll. For lack of a better term, I'm calling it a forensic approach to Muddy's music. Hopefully it comes together for an audio-linguistic joyride. Biographical info, backstory material, linguistic forays, historical comparisons, theoretical constructs, contextual insights, and even a few onomatopoeian overtures-it's all gonna be stewing in this pot of blues. ![]() At certain points during the journey things might not feel like a simple critique, or typical record review-I readily confess to including several digressions along the way to cut a much wider collective swath. Does Darkest Dungeon live up to the hype? Short answer: definitely, go buy it. Darkest Dungeon has built up quite the reputation for both excellence and challenge and those of us in the mobile crowd finally got our first crack at it with the recent release to iPad. For every “this game is great" comment there seemed to be a couple “this game is impossible" disclaimers. It also has a reputation for dishing out one heck of a beating to victory-seeking players. The game was officially released on Steam in early 2016 and has garnered all kinds of praise and game-of-the-year accolades. There are plenty of hidden dangers within each dungeon, and that's the beauty of Darkest Dungeon: after hours and hours of playing, we're still finding new strategies and surprises within the gameplay, which is still as punishing as ever. You’ve probably read headlines, and maybe even entire articles, about Darkest Dungeon ($4.99). On top of this, money management is key: before each adventure, players must stock up on various supplies before each trek (as the game so eloquently puts, 'measured now in gold, later in blood'). A constant supply of torches is a must, as a withering light leaves the party much more prone to ambush and stress. At the end of the day, this makes it all the more heartbreaking when veteran heroes succumb to the horrors of their profession: all of the adventures and invested money was for naught. This forces the player to manage an ever-building roster of heroes of varying levels, and ensures that there's no easy path to leveling up a hero to the top of the proverbial food chain. Here, players will face the toughest of challenges, and curse the enemies who take down their precious top-tier heroes which had survived so, so much before entering the Darkest Dungeon.Īs players progress through the game, they'll find that heroes will refuse to go on low-level missions as they rise in rank. And finally, the 'end game' objective is to get to the namesake of this entire title, The Darkest Dungeon. Each boss has three tiers of increasing difficulty, and they do a great job of extending the longevity of the game, especially since the narrator reveals a little bit more about the history of the mysterious hamlet when players embark on each mission. There's a plethora of boss missions riddled throughout the game, and they force players to drastically change their typical dungeon strategy to defeat them without loss. The voice work is perfect for the setting and feel of the game, and a deeper secret lurks right beneath the surface. To match this cryptic theme, Darkest Dungeon employs an arcane narrator who guides players through the story: he is the player's ancestor who toyed with the dark arts and brought the family name into darkness, and the player is there to restore the family to glory. Lovecraft will be delighted to find plenty of nods and inspirations within the game's dark and foreboding corridors. The art style of the game is simply gorgeous, and fans of H.P. Of course, players can reduce stress between each adventure by paying for activities in the town, or even remove some negative traits at a sanitarium, but those are costly endeavors - and picking up new heroes is free, which means its far more cost-effective to throw troubled people out than it is to fix them proper. Too much stress leads to the development of negative traits, and players will find themselves dismissing many a hero just because they picked up too much psychological baggage. As heroes gain experience in combat, they will also be collecting stress from enemy encounters. To be successful at Darkest Dungeon, players will have to become heartless managers who send countless heroes to their untimely demise in one of the games five varying dungeons. Now that it's here, the roguelike genre has a bright and shining example of how a title can bring a unique concept and a breath of fresh air to an oft-repetitive game type, and it's evident one of the sleeper hits of the year didn't waste much time in arriving this 2016. ![]() It's probably no surprise that chronic stress is connected with higher rates of depression and anxiety. Stress is considered one of the most common triggers for headaches - not just tension headaches, but migraines as well. "Stress causes higher levels of the hormone cortisol," says Winner, "and that seems to increase the amount of fat that's deposited in the abdomen." Excess fat in the belly seems to pose greater health risks than fat on the legs or hips - and unfortunately, that's just where people with high stress seem to store it. The kids with stressed out parents had a substantially higher risk of developing asthma. One study looked at how parental stress affected the asthma rates of young children who were also exposed to air pollution or whose mothers smoked during pregnancy. Some evidence suggests that a parent's chronic stress might even increase the risk of developing asthma in their children. Many studies have shown that stress can worsen asthma. People who have chronic heart problems need to avoid acute stress - and learn how to successfully manage life's unavoidable stresses - as much as they can.
